What are the benefits of drinking black coffee?

Yes, I work for Death Wish Coffee and yes, I put creamer in my coffee...
but not for long.

I, like most, started out with putting all things sweet in my coffee.  A little sugar here, a dash of creamer there. It quickly became a habit I was never willing to break. But as of late, my mind has been thrown in reverse. Coffee is a staple in my life and I’m ready to explore some new options. It’s time I develop a taste for the quality coffee I consume, rather than the added flavor.


Here are a few benefits of drinking black coffee (and my reasoning for making the switch):


1. Experiencing the coffee, the way it was designed.

Roasters spend hours upon hours cupping, roasting and developing roast profiles to get the most out of beans that were diligently grown, harvested and processed. The taste of coffee can vary considerably from farm to farm taking different weather conditions into account. Because of this, growing coffee takes constant evaluation to make sure the consistency stays the same throughout the process, time and time again. Drinking your coffee black will help you appreciate the delicate process.

2. That last drop of creamer doesn’t give you a heart attack. 

Drinking black coffee implies simplicity. Someone who enjoys additives to their morning pick-me-up typically don’t enjoy a cup if those elements are missing. If you drink black coffee, I’ve got one thing to say. No creamer? No problem!

3. Black coffee has next to no calories.

That being said, without the added milk, sugar and cream, you won’t experience the sugar crash. Enough said.

4. The perfect excuse for being a cheap date.

As the cheapest option on the menu, black coffee will satisfy you, your wallet and your date’s wallet. 

5. It’s impressive.

I don’t know what it is about black coffee that makes people bat an eye in your direction, but I encourage you to take advantage of it. One minute you’re feeling sorry for yourself drinking a 500 calorie Frappuccino, next you’re ordering a black coffee and the guy behind you is already on one knee. I’m not crying, you’re crying.


Black coffee is in its purist form. Learning to drink it takes time, but over time, I know my taste buds will adjust and my palette will develop. It’s healthier, classier and simpler and who doesn’t want a healthier, simpler life? Challenge accepted!
