Is Decaf Bad For You?

Let’s get one thing straight: mornings are tough enough without being handed a cup of shitty brown water claiming to be “coffee”. I want my coffee to kick in STAT and sweep me off my freshly new booted feet. I want that 'can’t eat, can’t sleep, reach for the stars, over the fence, world series kind of hit as that first drop hits my tongue', and I want it readily available all-day long.  One thing is for certain, I won’t get that from decaf. If you disagree, I respect your opinion, but you’re now just as much of an accident to me as the discovery of decaf in the first place.

That’s right. According to a recent report from Consumer Reports, decaf was discovered accidentally when a shipment of coffee beans was soaked in seawater that naturally extracted some of the caffeine. A few years later, decaffeinated coffee was made official, unfortunately using a harsh chemical called benzene to strip the beans of their caffeine. Scientists have now linked this chemical to cancer, blood disorders, and fetal development issues in pregnancies.

For those of you who swear by your morning decaf, due to the caffeine being “too much” for you to handle, you should probably know that there is no decaffeinating method that scrubs the bean of caffeine 100%. However, if you’re looking to minimize your exposure to such chemicals used in the process,  THE most important rule of thumb when hunting out the right one for you, is to look for the Organic Seal.

That seal not only prohibits pesticides but chemical solvents, as well. If your beans are not organic, there’s no harm in asking the supplier which method was used. Some studies show that drinking decaf can link to certain health benefits, but let me be the first to tell you, it doesn’t offer any social benefits. Do yourself a favor, go get a real coffee. You’ll thank me later.
